LOS ANGELES - Senior forward Julie Gallaudet has been named to the preseason All-West Coast Conference team and Loyola Marymount has been picked fifth in the coaches poll as the 2010 season is set to get underway, the WCC office announced Wednesday.
Coming off the program's fourth consecutive season of 10-or-more victories, LMU gained 26 points, one fewer than fourth-place Pepperdine. The Lions return 14 letterwinners from last year's team that went 11-6-2 overall and tied the Waves for fourth in the WCC at 3-3-1. Leading the way for LMU in 2010 is Gallaudet, who set the school's single-season record with nine assists last year and led the team with 19 points in gaining First Team All-WCC honors.
The three teams that represented the WCC in last year's NCAA Tournament fill the top three places in the 2010 preseason poll. Three-time defending WCC champions Portland gained seven of the eight first place votes and is the preseason favorite with 49 points. Santa Clara is second with 41.5 points and the remaining first place vote. San Diego is third with 38.5 points, followed by Pepperdine and LMU. Saint Mary's is tabbed sixth with 19 points, with Gonzaga (12 points) and San Francisco (11 points) rounding out the voting.
Gallaudet (Davis, CA) is the only LMU representative on the preseason All-WCC team after earning First Team accolades last season. She led the Lions in scoring with 19 points on five goals and a school-record nine assists. She is currently tied for sixth in LMU history in career assists (13) and is eighth on the career points list (34).
LMU kicks off preseason play this Friday, August 13, with a home exhibition match at 4 p.m. against Arizona State. The Lions open the regular season on Friday, August 20 at Cal.
