LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU women's tennis team took the courts today in full sunshine for a non-conference match against Cal Poly SLO. While the women were unable to stop the Mustangs as a team loosing 5-2, Jasmin Heckel and Jane Pringle had big singles wins for the Lions.
In doubles play the Lions were shut-out by the Cal Poly Mustangs in all three matches. At the number one position, Heckel/Nixon lost 8-5 to Balock/Matenauer ending their two match wining-streak. On court two, Wong/Lee defeated Lion's Valenzuela/Pironkova 8-1 while on court three Pringle/Bulkley lost 8-0 to Filip/Pane.
In singles play, things were looking better as the Lion's number one singles player Jasmin Heckel proceeded to defeat #98 ITA nationally ranked Suzie Matenauer of Cal Poly. Heckel played very consistently going 6-3, 6-4 to win the Lions a singles point for the day. On court three, senior Jane Pringle came back after going 6-0 to Steffi Wong of Cal Poly to win 7-6 in the second set and win the tiebreaker 10-4. Pringle's win gave the Lion's their second point for the day against Cal Poly to ultimately go 5-2 overall. In other singles play Pironkova lost 6-2, 6-4 to Balock, LaPorte was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Filip of Cal Poly. Valenzuela made it close going 7-5, 6-4 against Davis while Nixon was unable to stop Markhoff 6-1, 6-2.
Next up the Lions will play Thursday against the UCLA Bruins at UCLA at 1:30pm.
