LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In their third West Coast Conference match up this Sunday against the Portland Pilots at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon the Lions suffered another tough loss. While the Lions' walked away with a slim 11-10 advantage in shots and held a 6-4 edge in corner kick the Lions were not able to score but one goal and walked away with 6-5-0 overall record and 1-2-0 in conference play.
The Pilots Kawulok scored the first goal in the 12th minute on a feed from vanSchaik. near the left post, driving a shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Just six minutes later, the Pilots goal leader put another goal away off a rebound to give Portland a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the second half.
Lions' goalie Max Young, had two saves in the first half and allowed two goals. LMU Senior Patrick Sampson took over for the second half with one save and one goal, but the Pilot's early lead and offensive momentum was difficult to halt. Ten minutes into the second half, Pilot's vanSchaik made it a 3-0 UP lead with a shot at the top of the 18-yard box to score into the lower left corner of the net.
LMU finally found the net in the second half of the game when Rafael Baca was able to score on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute for his 8th goal of the season off a penalty kick. Baca's goal solidifies him as the conference leader in goals and points per game as LMU's steady scoring star. Also for the Lions, Logan McDaniel had three shots and freshman Chris Bernardi had two shots today against the Pilots, but were unable to put one away.
The Lion's are looking to bounce back from a tough road trip to their next conference games at home against Santa Clara on October 16th at 3:00pm and Saint Mary's on October 18th also at 3:00pm.
