Princeton, NJ (Sept. 8) - Traveling to the other side of the country didn't change much for the LMU women's soccer team, as the Lions were forced to play their fifth straight double overtime game that resulted in a 2-2 tie with the University of Pennsylvania this evening in Princeton, NJ. Lori Sims gave LMU a 2-0 lead in the first 19 minutes of the game, but the Quakers forced overtime with a goal with just 22 seconds remaining in the game.
Sims gave LMU a 1-0 lead at 17:03 off of an assist from Kelly Lewandowski, and gave the Lions a 2-0 lead just 1:44 later. She took advantage of a misplay by Penn to score her third goal of the season.
The Quakers responded with a goal just before half. Natalie Capuano chipped in ball in the box from Eileen Larkin to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the break.
With the clock ticking down, a Penn throw-in from a harmless spot near midfield qucikly turned into a Quaker goal. Tracy Bienenfeld sent in a long ball that became a scramble in front of the Loyola Marymount goal. Rachel Fletcher was able to corral the ball and push it into the far corner with just 22 seconds left on the clock.
The overtimes proceeded with drama, the height of it coming with exactly two minutes remaining when Jessica Keeley was sent off with a red card after she handled a breakaway attempt by Loyola Marymount. With sophomore goalkeeper Jacquelyn McNaughton stepping between the pipes and the Quakers playing a woman down, LMU had a great opportunity to get the winner with a free kick directly in front from 20 yards out. However, the shot went well wide, and Penn survived for the draw.
The Lions outshot Penn, 16-8, led by Sims who had nine shots. Joslyn Slovek made two saves for LMU, and Jessica Keeley made four saves for Penn.
Sims' two goals gives her 17 for her career and she passes Yvonne Dalton (1993-96) and moves into second place on the all-time career goals list. She is just three behind Heather Farr's record of 20. Sims now has seven points on the season, and 45 for her career. She needs just six points to tie the all-time points record and seven to break it.
The Lions (0-2-3) will face host Princeton on Saturday morning at 11:00am EST. The Tigers (0-3) are looking for their first win of the season after falling to Arizona, 2-1, in the opening game of the tournament.
