Double Overtime For Fourth Straight Game

Sept. 4, 2005

Box Score

Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 4) - The LMU women's soccer team played its fourth straight double overtime game this afternoon at Sullivan Field, securing a 1-1 tie with Navy. Whitney Temple gave LMU a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the game, but Navy evened things up in the second half. The Lions move to 0-2-2 on the season with their fourth double overtime game, while Navy is now 2-1-1 with its first tie of the season.

LMU dominated the first 15 minutes of the game. Lori Sims had a shot right in front of the net bounce up to hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounce out. The Lions took seven shots in the first 13 minutes of the game, and the Lions outshot the Mids 11-2 in the first half.

Sara Aldama's corner kick set up Temple's goal. Temple gathered the ball about 15 yards out and sent a blast to the back of the net. Navy goalkeeper Haley Crain could do nothing but watch the ball whiz past her.

The Mids came out of the halftime break with some life, tying the game with a Meggie Curran goal in the 54th minute. Brigette Fox sent in a nice cross across the face of the goal from the left side. With LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek charging, Curren headed the ball past her to make it a 1-1 game.

The game was very even in the second half, with LMU outshooting Navy just 6-5 in the period. Neither team took a shot in the first overtime period, and the second overtime frame was even as well.

Freshman Michelle Kanama was about a foot away from being a hero in her first career start. The Lions kicked the ball behind the entire Navy backline, and Kanama ran with a pack of Navy defenders to get the ball. With the announcer counting down the final 10 seconds of the game, Kanama reached the ball and nudged it around the Navy goalkeeper. The ball squirted just to the right of the goalpost and the game ended.

Three LMU players made their season debut in the game. Brandi Young earned her first career start in the defense, and Jessica Johns saw her first action of the year after missing the first three games. Third-year player but redshirt freshman Amy Sauer made her first career appearance in the Lion defense, playing the entire second half and both overtime periods. The defender has missed the last two seasons after tearing her ACL in preseason training both years.

The Lions head east for their next two games, playing in the Princeton Tournament. The Lions will face the host Tigers on Thursday night at 7:30pm EST.
