Final Stats
Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 25) - The Loyola Marymount University men's soccer team used two goals in the first 18 minutes and then solid defense the rest of the way to defeat No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, at Sullivan Field on Sunday afternoon.
The game started like it was on its way to set goal records. UC Santa Barbara got on the board first and in a hurry as Bryan Byrne scored just 7:55 into the game when he took a bouncing ball in front of the net and tapped it in for the 1-0 lead. Ivan Becerra earned an assist on the play.
Both teams where looking offensive as the Lions evened the game up just four minutes later as Diego Barrera scored at the 12:44 mark. Bobby Burling served the ball into the box and it went off the goalie's glove and Barrera put it in.
Burling and Barerra hooked up just five minutes later as Burling was on the other end of the action, scoring on a play set-up perfectly by Barerra at the 17:48 mark. Barrera took the ball deep in the left corner and dribbled and faked two defenders to set-up a wide open cross for Burling.
The goal by Burling ended up being the game winner as the teams settled into a physical contest. There were five yellow cards issued in the game and a total of 58 fouls were called.
Both defenses stiffened as Lions' keeper Robert Flores finished three saves on 12 Gaucho shots. The Lions finished with 13 shots, nine in the first quarter as their defense protected the lead down the stretch. UCSB keeper Kyle Reynish finished with six saves.
The game got interesting down the stretch. The Lions, holding onto the one-goal lead, was called for a foul at midfield with 15 seconds remaining. The Gauchos got possession deep on the right side as the 10-second count started. In the final two seconds, the Gauchos served a cross that was headed in right after the buzzer sounded and the goal was disallowed.
For the Lions, they improve to 2-2-2 on the season as UCSB falls to 4-2-1. In eight meetings the Lions have won all eight, including the last meeting in Santa Barbara in 2003.
The win catapults the Lions into conference play next weekend as they head to the Pacific Northwest to take on Gonzaga on Sept. 30 and then Portland on Oct. 2.
