LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 18) - It was another regulation victory for the LMU women's soccer team this afternoon as the Lions handed #29 Georgia its first loss of the season, 1-0. The win gave LMU an undefeated weekend in the LMU-Four Points Sheraton Culver City Tournament, the only team to pick up two wins. Jennifer Horn headed in the game-winner off a Sara Aldama free kick for the Lions. Lori Sims was named co-Offensive MVP of the Tournament, and Horn earned Defensive MVP honors.
The Lions controlled the flow of play in the first half, limiting Georgia to just one shot in the first half. After a Georgia foul on the left side of the field, Aldama looped a beautiful ball into the far post, where Horn was waiting to leap and head the ball into the goal at 37:20. It was her first goal of the season to give LMU the 1-0 lead.
Although Georgia had more opportunities in the second half, the Lion defense kept them at bay. The defensive line of Horn, Aldama, Kellie Schroeder and Alicia Lloyd limited Georgia to just five shots on the game, and Joslyn Slovek recorded her second straight shutout by making three saves.
Sims led all players with four shots, while Kelly Lewandowski, Whitney Temple, Jamie Bell and Horn each had a pair of shots.
Caitlin Dingle led Georgia with two shots on goal, and Lauren Church made five saves in the loss.
In the tournament's other game, USC handed Oakland a 3-0 defeat. After a scoreless first half where the Trojans outshot Oakland 11-0, USC finally got on the board in the second half. Jocelyn Leche's bending corner kick knocked off the far post into the goal to break open the scoring in the 58th minute. USC added another goal just three minutes later, and put in the third goal in the 71st minute. The Trojans finish the weekend with a 1-0-1 record, while Oakland finishes 0-2 in the tournament. On Friday, USC and Georgia finished with a 1-1 tie, while LMU defeated Oakland, 2-0.
LMU placed four players on the All-Tournament Team, including Sims as co-Offensive MVP and Horn as Defensive MVP. It is the second straight year that Horn was named the Defensive MVP of the LMU Tournament. Slovek and Tana Smothermon are LMU's other representatives.
The rest of the tournament team follows: USC- Tracy Lansing, co-Offensive MVP, Meagan Holmes, Amy Rodriguez. Georgia - Cortni Joyner, Randi-Lynn Bruso. Oakland - Kristi Swaving, Marianne Samdal.
The Lions return to action next Friday, hosting UC Riverside at 4:00pm at Sullivan Field.
