DALLAS, Texas - The LMU men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie with host SMU Saturday evening in day two of the SMU Mi Cocina Classic held at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. It is the second 1-1 tie in two days for the Lions, who played 220 minutes of soccer this weekend.
LMU outshot SMU 9-8 in the first half, but the Mustangs got on the board first. SMU scored its lone goal shortly before halftime (42:11 mark) when senior Duke Hashimoto one-timed a centering pass from teammate Kellan Zindel.
The Lions outshot SMU again, 6-5, in the second half, and took advantage of an SMU foul in the box to tie the game. At the 71:27 mark, an LMU player was taken down in the box, setting up a Lion penalty kick. Armando Melendez connected on the Lion PK, tying the game at 1-1. Both teams played a man down due to red cards (Stephen Carlson - LMU; Ryan Mirsky - SMU), which opened up the field. Each team had numerous chances to score but could not capitalize on those chances.
Rob Flores had another strong game in goal, making a season-high nine saves. Bobby Burling led LMU with six shots.
Flores and Matthew Mejia were named to the Mi Cocina Classic All-Tournament team. It is the first honor for both players.
The road doesn't get any easier for LMU as the Lions host 2004 NCAA Runner-Up UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, September 25th at Sullivan Field at 4:00pm. It is the second game of a doubleheader with the LMU women's team.
