Soccer Stars Shine During Summer

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Three Lions helped Cal South win the USASA State Select Regional Tournament earlier this summer, and will represent Region IV at the Donnelly Cup in January of 2006. In addition, Jessica Hanson was selected to participate in the 1st annual USASA National Select Team Camp at the Home Depot Center last weekend. She was one of 12 players chosen to the National Select Team which will compete against the Mexican National Team later this month.

Hanson joined Lion teammates Alicia Lloyd and Lori Sims on the Cal South team that won the USASA State Select Regional Tournament in San Bernadino on June 16-19. They defeated Lion Tana Smothermon and the Cal North team, 3-2, followed by wins over Utah, 4-3, and Arizona, 4-2. In the finals, Cal South beat Utah, 3-0, to win the championship. The Cal South team will be the Region IV representative at the Donnelly Cup to determine a National Champion for State Select Teams. The tournament will be held during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in January.

Following the regional tournament, Hanson was invited to participate in the National Select Team camp during the Fourth of July weekend at the Home Depot Center. She was one of 36 women selected to participate in the camp.

Hanson was selected to the National Select Team following the camp and will travel to Mexico later this month to play against the Mexican Women's National Team. In addition, the National Select Team is also scheduled to play Iceland at a later date.
