Slow Second Half Costly at Weber State

OGDEN, Utah - Poor shooting early in the second half cost LMU a victory at Weber State this evening, falling to the Wildcats, 65-55. LMU had a 33-30 lead at halftime, but shot just 27.3% in the second half. Rachael Ziemann led LMU with 14 points, and Ashlee Dunlap finished with her second double double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. LMU falls to 1-4 on the year, while Weber State improves to 3-2.

The game was close in the opening minutes of the game. Weber State was hot from three-point range, hitting four three-pointers in the first 12 minutes of the game. But the Rachael Ziemann and the Lions shot well from the field and controlled the boards to keep the game close. The lead changed hands six times in the first half, with the Lions taking a 33-28 lead at 1:35, before the Wildcats scored a basket in the final minute to make it a 33-30 LMU lead at halftime.

Rachael Ziemann lead LMU with nine points in the first half, while Ashlee Dunlap had six rebounds and six points in the opening half. Laura Porter led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. The Lions outshot WSU, making 46.7% of their shots, to WSU's 37.9%. LMU also outrebounded the Wildcats, 21-17.

Weber State came out of the halftime break shooting well and outrebounding LMU. Porter's basket at 15:45 gave Weber State its first lead of the second half. LMU struggled offensively, shooting just 25% from the field in the first eight minutes of the half. Amanda Patton's three-pointer cut the WSU lead to three points, 49-46, but the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 56-47. Five straight points by Rachael Ziemann cut the lead to 56-52 with under six minutes remaining. Ziemann's three pointer at 6:21 put the senior in sole possession of third place in the LMU career three-pointers list.

After a nearly three minute scoreless drought, the Wildcats answered with a three-pointer by Chelsey Warburton. Both teams would use strong defense to keep the game at 59-52 for over two minutes until Shantee Releford's free throw made it a 60-52 WSU lead. Dunlap answered with a layup to make it a 60-54 game, but the Lions could not cut the lead anymore. WSU made five free throws in the final minute for the 10 points margin of victory.

Five players finished in double digit scoring for Weber State, led by Warburton's 13 points. Releford had a career-high 10 points with 12 rebounds and five blocks in the contest. Rachael Ziemann and Dunlap were the only Lions in double digits.
