SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Kelly Lewandowski's golden goal gave the LMU women's soccer team a 1-0 double overtime win over San Francisco in WCC action this afternoon in San Francisco. The senior forward took a pass from Jennifer Horn, beating the USF goalkeeper from three yards out to give the Lions the win in the 105th minute of action. The Lion defense did not allow a single shot on goal to record its seventh shutout of the season.
LMU outshot USF, 9-6 in regulation but neither team could find the back of the net. Seven of LMU's shots were on goal, including four by senior Lori Sims.
The Lion offense kept attacking in the overtime periods, determined to pull out the victory. LMU outshot USF 3-1 in the first overtime period, and took another three shots in the second OT before the eventual game-winning shot. Four minutes into the second overtime, amid a melee in the USF box, Lewandowski managed to get foot on the ball three yards out after a short cross from Horn to give the Lions their first overtime victory of the season. It marks the eighth double overtime game of the season. LMU is now 1-3-4 in double overtime games this season.
With the goal, Lewandowski now has five on the season, and 18 in her four year career. She is now just two goals away from tying the LMU career goals record of 20 set by Heather Farr.
Lion goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek did not have to make a save to record her seventh shutout of the season. Katie Hodgson made eight saves for the Dons.
The Lions return to action this Thursday when they host Cal State Northridge at Sullivan Field for their final non-conference outing. Game time is 3:00pm.
