LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 2) - One shot on goal was all the Lions needed for a 1-0 win over Utah this afternoon in women's soccer action at Sullivan Field. Kelly Lewandowski's third goal of the season gave LMU the victory, and Joslyn Slovek made four saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. The Lions improve to 4-5-3 on the season, and head into conference play with a game at Pepperdine next Sunday.
LMU's first shot of the game was Lewandowski's goal at 23:25. Lori Sims drew the defense to the left side of the box, and passed the ball to a waiting Lewandowski in front of the goal. She received the ball with her back to the goal, but quickly turned and shot to ball to the left side to give the Lions the lead.
The rest of the game was played mostly in the midfield area. Neither team got any significant shot attempts off. Slovek made four saves, and cut off numerous crosses, but the Utes did not threaten.
Utah outshot the Lions, 9-5, in the game, and were led by Katy Reineke who had three shots. Lewandowski and Katie Osborne each had two shots for the Lions.
The goal by Lewandowski is her third of the year, and her 16th career goal. It puts her in a tie for third place all time in the LMU record books. She now has 38 career points, good for fifth on the all-time list. Sims' assist gives her 49 career points, and she is now just two points away from tying the LMU points record. She needs two goals to tie the all-time goals record.
After two straight losses, the Lions return to the win category and improve to 4-5-3 on the season. Utah drops to 7-5 on the year, and has lost five of its last six games.
The Lions return to action on Sunday when they open conference play at Pepperdine at 1:00pm. Last season, the two teams battled 110 minutes to a 1-1 tie.
