CHENEY, Wash. - The Loyola Marymount women's soccer team defeated Eastern Washington 3-1 this afternoon in Cheney, Washington. Jessica Hanson and Tana Smothermon scored for LMU, who was also the beneficiary of an own goal by Eastern Washington. The Eagles scored in the 89th minute to ruin the LMU shutout. LMU improves to 7-3-2, while EWU drops to 3-7-1.
Hanson put the Lions on the board quickly. She took a cross from Jessica Johns and headed it past Eagle goalkeeper Tiera Como to put LMU up 1-0 at 6:37. Smothermon made it a 2-0 game at 14:55. She took advantage of the EWU defense, collecting a deflection off of a defender before kicking the ball in for the second LMU goal.
LMU had a 2-0 advantage for most of the game. The Eagle defense misplayed a ball and sent it into their own net at 78:30 to give LMU a 3-0 lead until the final minutes of play. EWU's Chelse Zegzula kicked a cross from Traci Jellison past LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek to ruin the LMU shutout. It was EWU's first shot on goal in the game.
The Lions outshot EWU 18-10, and had seven shots on goal to EWU's one. Como made three saves for the Eagles, and replacement goalkeeper Kali Paris made a save.
LMU will open up conference play next weekend as its hosts Pepperdine next Sunday at Sullivan Field at 1:00pm. The Waves are ranked #24 in the latest Soccer America Poll.
