Lions Fall 56-47 To San Francisco At Home

Feb. 1, 2003

Final Stats

Los Angeles, Calif., - Saturday, Feb.1, 2003 - The Loyola Marymount University women's basketball team suffered only its second home loss of the year, 56-47, at the hands of the San Francisco Lady Dons on Saturday night in Gersten Pavilion. Junior Adrianne Slaughter earned her second straight double-double for the Lions (15 points, 14 rebounds), it is her fifth double-double of the year.

The Lions (11-9/3-4 WCC) went on the board first on a lay-up from Slaughter. The Lions held a slim four-point lead over San Francisco (8-13/3-4 WCC) twice before Joy Hollingsworth put the Lady Dons up by two (15-13) on a three-pointer with just under six minutes remaining in the half. LMU regained the advantage briefly (16-15) as sophomore Mary Turner answered with a three of her own. The Lions lead would be short lived though as USF went back up, 17-16, as Leeane Jensen scored two of her 21 points of the night. The Lady Don's cushioned their lead taking a seven point (23-16) advantage into the lockerroom.

The second half brought more of the same for the Lions who saw the deficit stretch to 12 points (30-18) early in the period. LMU managed to nearly double its field goal total from the first period (7) registering 13 in the second. It was not enough though as the Lions' defense allowed USF to score 13 field goals in the final half as well.

LMU was able to cut the lead to five (43-38) with 5:26 remaining in the game, but that would be as close as it would come. USF held on to record the 56-47 win.

For the Lions, Slaughter's 15 points came on a 7-for-11 showing from the floor. Her 14 rebounds was a game-high and if that was not enough, she also tallied six blocks on the night. Turner also finished with 15 points, tying with Slaughter for the team lead. Only three other Lions managed to get into the scoring column. Freshman guard Bianca Ziemann exploded for nine second half points. Juniors Raelen Self and Jasmin Matthews each finished with four points.

USF's Jensen led the game with her 21 points. Jensen was 10-for-16 from the floor, pulled down six boards, two blocks and two steals. Hollingsworth followed with 17 points and six assists.

LMU returns to action on the road next weekend. The Lions continue West Coast Conference play at Gonzaga on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
