San Diego, Calif. - Despite having three players score in double-digits, the Lions fell, 65-61, to the University of San
Diego on Thursday night. Sophomore Jackie Woods led the Lions with a team-high 15 points off the bench.
Trailing by five points with two minutes to play, USD's Erin Malich drew a foul and
dropped a pair of free throws to bring USD within three. Moments later
Kerri Nakamoto
hit her third three-pointer of the night to even the score at 61 with 1:14
remaining. The pair combined to sink four-of-six charity shots in the waning
moments to secure the win.
San Diego (7-8; 1-1 WCC) jumped out to a 13-3 lead against the Lions and
controlled the scoreboard for the entire first half, holding a 34-21
advantage
at the break.
Loyola Marymount (10-6; 2-1 WCC) staged a second half comeback, culminated
by a
spinning transition lay-up from freshman Bianca Ziemann. The 5-foot-8 guard
scored eight consecutive points for LMU, and gave the Lions their first
lead,
55-54, with 5:02 remaining. Despite an inspired attempt to complete the
comeback and open up league play with three straight wins, LMU was turned
away. Ziemann finished with 14 points on 6-of-9
shooting from the floor. Woods' 15 points came on a 5-for-11 performance from the floor, she also added four steals. Junior Adrianne Slaughter was the third Lion to reach double figures in the scoring column, she ended the night with 11 points.
The Lions continue West Coast Conference action on the road in Santa Clara, Calif. LMU heads north to take on the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:05 p.m.
