Lions Fall 1-0 To Cal Poly

Sept. 20, 2002

Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif., - Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 - The Loyola Marymount University women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Cal Poly on Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The loss is the first at home for the Lions this season.

The Lions (4-2-0 Overall) came out firing in the first half and nearly took an early lead on a shot from junior Shari Nishikawa. Nishikawa's attempt was tipped away at the last second by Mustangs goalkeeper Greta Shirdon and hit the crossbar before rebounding back out to the field. That was the only real scoring chance by either team in the first period both goalkeepers were flawless sending a 0-0 score into the halftime break.

The Mustangs (4-3-0 Overall) opened the game scoring with an unassisted goal by Megan Schlegel. The shot was Schlegel's only one of the day. Cal Poly managed to get off just four other shots in the game, but were able to keep the Lions at bay for the win.

The Lions poured it on late in the game and nearly netted the game-tying goal twice as shots from Kelly Lewandowski and Lori Sims nearly found the back of the net. LMU's front line made Shirdon work hard for her six saves. Sims led the Lions with three shots in the game while Nishikawa followed with two. The Lions ended up outshooting the Mustangs 10-5 but could not come up with the equalizing goal.

The Lions return to action this Sunday, Sept.22 when they host Loyola-Maryland. That contest is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Sullivan Field.
