Moraga, CA (Oct. 27, 2002) - The 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's soccer team went back to their winning ways thanks to a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's College on Sunday afternoon at Garaventa Field in West Coast Conference action.
With the win the Lions remain in second in the WCC race with a record of 12-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the WCC. The Gaels fall to 4-10-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference.
The Lions broke the scoreless tie at the 28:00 minute mark when Michael Coakley fired in his second goal of the season on a double-assist from Arturo Torres and Andres Murriagui.
At the end of the first half the Lions led 1-0, while outshooting the Gaels 7-4.
LMU's Coakley scored his second goal of the game at the 50:38 minute
mark on a double-assist from Brian Vestal and Kevin Novak to go up 2-0.
The Gaels cut the Lions' lead in half when Michael Johnson scored his
first collegiate goal on an assist from Derek Youpel at the 64:04 minute
mark.
SMC goalkeeper Kealii Kuehu finished the game with a career-high seven
saves, while LMU's Adam Sthay recorded three saves to earn the win. The Lions outshot the Gaels 15-11.
The Lions will travel to San Francisco to take on the Dons on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
