Los Angeles, Calif. -- Freshman Kellie Schroeder's team-leading fourth goal of the season just 5:26 into the game proved to be the game winner as Loyola Marymount defeated UC Irvine 1-0 at Sullivan Field in front of 161 fans. The Lions lifted their record to 7-3-2, while the Anteaters fell to 5-6 overall.
As the two teams battled for possession at midfield, senior Myka Peck broke free and led Schroeder for the shot from the right wing. It was Peck's second assist of the season. Schroeder and Peck now lead the team with eight points a piece.
Lion goalie Kelly Yukihiro was the beneficiary of a tremendous LMU defense. She came up with two saves for her third shutout of the season. The LMU defense held the Anteaters to just one shot in the first half. The Lions outshot UC Irvine 6-4 in the contest.
UC Irvine was able to scramble late and put some pressure on the Lions, but the LMU midfielders and defenders thwarted any comeback hopes.
LMU opens West Coast Conference action this Sunday at Sullivan Field when the Lions host No. 17 Pepperdine at noon.
