Portland, Oreg., Thursday, January 17, 2002 - The Portland Pilots defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions 84-70 on Thursday night in front of 253 in the Chiles Center. The Lions, who had all five starters score in double digits, were led by freshman Mary Turner with 15 points on the night.
LMU falls to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the West Coast Conference with the loss while Portland improves to 9-7 and 1-2 with the win. The Pilots also stretch their perfect at home record to 8-0.
The Pilots were led by three players who combined for 80 of the Pilots points. Sophomore Khalila O'Rielly-Williams scored 30 points for the Pilots while shooting 10-11 from the field and 10-11 from the free throw line.
The first half was back and forth with neither team taking more than a six point lead. The Lions
took a one point lead on a 3-pointer by Rosa Bernasconi with just over six minutes in the first half. A fastbreak by Da'Love Woods would give the Pilots the lead for good at 33-32, with 5:43 left in the half. The Pilots took a 44-38 lead into the locker room.
The second half started out back and forth, but the Pilots would not relinquish the lead. Portland
would build up a 22 point lead with just over four minutes to go in the game, but Claudine Auld would try to get the Lions back into the game scoring eight points in the last four minutes. It would be too little too late for the Lions, as the Pilots won their first West Coast Conference game of the season.
The Lions were hampered with foul trouble with their leading scorer Bryn Britton picking up
three fouls in the first half and picking up her fourth with 13:36 remaining in the game. She fouled out with over four minutes to go in the game. Britton ended the game with 10 points in 27 minutes of playing. Turner's team-leading 15 points came on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, she also had five steals and three rebounds for the Lions. Bernasconi ended her night with 12 points all coming from beyond the arc (4-4). Junior Kate Murray and sophomore Adrianne Slaughter rounded out the double-digit scoring starters. Murray picked up 11 points while Slaughter chipped in 10 points and five boards.
LMU now heads to Spokane, Wash., to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Lions and Zags will tip things off on Saturday, January 19 at 7 p.m.
