Los Angeles, Calif., - Saturday, Mar. 31, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount women's softball team split its Western Athletic Conference doubleheader, 3-0 and 0-4, against the University of Hawaii Sunday afternoon at the LMU Softball Field. Christy Cerecedes, who is in her first weekend back from a shoulder injury, led the Lions with a 4-for-5 effort which included 1 RBI, 1 run scored and her second home run of the year.
The Lions (23-15 Overall/2-6 WAC) shutout the Rainbow Wahine (31-12 Overall/3-1 WAC) 3-0 in Game 1. Cerecedes put LMU on the board in the second inning with a home run over the left center field fence. The Lions struck again in the fourth and fifth innings. SS Kim Bissett gave LMU a 2-0 cushion in the fourth as she scored on an RBI single to right by RF Lisa Abbott. LF Anna Trauernicht added an insurance run in the fifth as she drew a walk and then scored as 2B Laura Eckley tripled to left field.
Hawaii managed just five hits off Lions' starting pitcher Jennifer Heliotes, but could not cross the plate for a score. Heliotes threw her fourth complete game of the year and improved to 5-3 with the win. Felicity Witt picked up the loss for the Rainbow Wahine she drops her record to 17-6.
The tides turned for both teams in Game 2 as the Lions were shutout 4-0 by Hawaii. Jaime Lyons pitched 5.1 innings for LMU giving up 4 runs on 7 hits. She gave way to Sami Strinz in relief, Strinz threw 1.2 innings and allowed just 1 hit. The Wahine picked up their first runs of the day on a two-run homer to left field by SS Kate Judd. It was Judd's third bomb of the season. It was deja vu for the Lions in the sixth as 1B Stacey Porter hit a two-run shot this time over the right field fence pushing the score to 4-0.
The Lions managed six hits off Hawaii starting pitcher Desiree Duran but could not find a way home. Duran earned the win and improved her record to 8-4. Lyons suffered the loss for LMU she is 0-3 on the year.
