Lions Rally Late to Force Extras in WCC Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Loyola Marymount softball opened West Coast Conference play Friday night at Smith Field with a battle that went down to the final innings, as the Lions rallied late to force extras before falling to Santa Clara, 5-2, in eight innings.

Santa Clara struck early with two runs in the first, but LMU quickly settled in and matched the Broncos inning for inning. In the circle, Lindsay O'Dell went the distance, tossing all eight innings while working through traffic and keeping the Lions within striking distance. Defensively, LMU came up with timely plays, turning two key double plays to erase scoring threats and shift momentum back in their favor.

Offensively, the Lions showed patience and resilience throughout the night. Izzy Jamgotchian led the way by reaching base four times with four walks, consistently putting pressure on the defense. Rubi Lopez added a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Taelor Walker chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

The breakthrough came in the sixth inning when McKenna Charbonneau delivered in a clutch pinch-hit opportunity, lacing an RBI double to left center to get LMU on the board and spark the offense.

With momentum building, the Lions carried it into the seventh. After loading the bases, LMU capitalized as Sakora Harvell brought home the tying run on a fielder's choice, evening the score at 2-2 and completing the late-inning comeback.

However, Santa Clara responded in the eighth, stringing together timely hits to plate three runs and regain control. LMU continued to fight in the bottom half, but couldn't generate another rally as the Broncos took the opener.

Despite the result, the Lions showed grit in their first conference contest – battling back late, executing defensively, and getting contributions up and down the lineup.

LMU (22-12, 0-1) will return to Smith Field to continue its WCC-opening series against Santa Clara on Saturday, March 28 at 4:00 PM, before concluding the series Sunday, March 29 at 12:00 PM.
