Walk-Off Magic at Smith Field Lifts Lions Over Broncos

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU softball delivered in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, walking off Santa Clara with a 3-2 victory to close out the series at Smith Field. The Lions used a late surge in the bottom of the seventh to secure their first West Coast Conference win of the weekend and finish the series on a high note.

In a tightly contested game from the start, both teams traded opportunities early before LMU broke through in the third inning. Taelor Walker sparked the offense with a double, and Mika Yuge followed with an RBI single to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

Santa Clara responded in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead, but LMU's pitching staff kept the deficit within reach. Jessie Gilbert set the tone early, striking out five across four innings, while Sawyer Denser and Sara Pinedo bridged the middle frames. Lindsay O'Dell came on late and shut the door, earning the win after recording two strikeouts in the final inning.

Trailing by one entering the bottom of the seventh, the Lions once again showed their resilience. McKenna Charbonneau ignited the rally with a leadoff single, and Avery Francis followed by reaching base getting hit with a pitch to put pressure on the Broncos' defense. After Izzy Jamgotchian drew yet another walk – continuing her strong presence at the plate – LMU loaded the bases with one out.

The Lions capitalized on the opportunity, as the tying run came across on a defensive miscue before the winning run scored on a wild pitch, sealing the 3-2 walk-off victory and sending the Lions into celebration.

LMU tallied six hits on the afternoon, with Francis leading the way with a two-hit performance, while Walker and Yuge each contributed key extra-base and RBI moments.

With the win, LMU improves to 23-13 overall and 1-2 in WCC play, gaining momentum as conference action continues.
