Women's Basketball Defeats Cal Poly 54-46

Nov. 28, 2001

Los Angeles, Calif., - Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 - The Loyola Marymount women's basketball team claimed its fourth straight win on Wednesday night with a 54-46 victory over Cal Poly at Gersten Pavilion. Senior Rosa Bernasconi was LMU's offensive leader with a game-high 13 points.

The Lions improve to 4-1 with the win while Cal Poly drops to 1-4 with the loss.

LMU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead while CPU went 0-for-11 from the floor to start the game. The Lions, who led by as many as seven, took a four-point advantage (29-25) into the lockerroom.

The Mustangs came to within one point several times in the second half and caught the Lions tying things up at the four minute mark (41-41) and again with just over one minute left in regulation (46-46). That was as close as CPU could get as LMU regained the lead on a made layup by Lion freshman Mary Turner. Turner would end the game with six points, three rebounds, one block and two steals.

The Lions clinched the game as center Adrianne Slaughter blocked CPU's Heather Journey's jumper with 22 seconds left in the game. Slaughter took the ball and fed Bryn Britton down the court for an easy layup. Slaughter tallied nine points and led the game with 14 rebounds and four blocks. Britton and fellow guard Bernasconi added in eight points and 13 points, respectively.

The Lions go on the road this weekend for the Stony Brook Tournament in Long Island, New York. LMU faces off against George Mason in the opening day of the tournament this Friday, Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
