Klosek Offensive Performance Not Enough to Avoid Sweep

Spokane, WASH. - A four-run eighth inning rally came too little, too late for Loyola Marymount on Sunday, as the Lions dropped the series finale to Gonzaga 14-8 at Patterson Baseball Complex, falling to 12-33 on the season.

LMU showed early resilience, erasing a three-run first-inning deficit with a three-spot of their own in the top of the second. Matt Moreno singled and stole second before Jordan Ortiz laced a two-run double to right-center, scoring both Moreno and Zach Wadas. Ortiz then came home on a wild pitch to knot the game at three and give the Lions early momentum.

The deficit proved too difficult to overcome, however, as Gonzaga answered with run-scoring innings in five of the final seven frames. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead for good in the third on a Hudson Shupe sacrifice fly, then broke the game open in the fourth when reliever Jake Geis surrendered a three-run home run to Ryder Young, pushing the score to 7-3. Starter Avery Laine, who exited after three innings, was charged with the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits.

Jaxson Wall provided a brief spark in the fifth with a solo home run to left field, pulling LMU within 7-4, but the Lions could not generate enough sustained offense to keep pace. Gonzaga continued to pour it on with a three-run sixth and a two-run seventh, extending the lead to 12-4 heading into the final frames.

LMU refused to go quietly in the eighth, sending ten batters to the plate in its most productive inning of the afternoon. Wall, Williams, and Malone strung together consecutive singles to load the bases before Wadas drove in the first run with a single to center. Richie Klosek then delivered the highlight of the rally, a three-run double to left field that capped a four-run inning and pulled the Lions within 12-8.

Gonzaga answered with two runs in the bottom half to restore a comfortable margin, and LMU went down in order in the ninth to finalize the 14-8 defeat.

Klosek was the standout performer on the day, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Wall contributed a 2-for-5 effort with a home run and an RBI.
