Lions Split Double Header in North Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — LMU split a Saturday doubleheader at David F. Couch Ballpark, rolling past Davidson 11-1 in the opener before dropping a 15-4 decision to host No. 16 Wake Forest in the nightcap. First baseman Zach Wadas was the offensive story of the day, launching three home runs across the two games.

Game 1: LMU 11, Davidson 1

Adam Behrens was dominant from the start, delivering seven clean innings in what stands as his best outing of the young season. The junior right-hander held Davidson to four hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter in a complete-game victory that required just 86 pitches, 62 of them for strikes. The only run he allowed came on an RBI triple in the third. Behrens induced two double plays and worked quickly and efficiently throughout, giving the Lions' bullpen a full day of rest heading into the second game.

LMU's offense erupted in the third inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs off relievers after chasing starter C. Cavanaugh. Wadas ignited the outburst with a two-run homer to right field that plated Noah Malone, who had led off the inning with a walk. Travis Friend then capped the frame with a three-run shot to left that scored Nate Stiveson and Jordan Ortiz, pushing the lead to 5-1.

Jaxson Wall had another strong afternoon at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. His two-run blast to left field in the fifth scored Ortiz and extended the cushion to 7-1. Wadas added his second homer of the game in the sixth, a two-run shot to right that scored Malone again. DJ Ghiorso contributed a run-scoring groundout in a two-run seventh as LMU rolled to the final.

Wadas finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs on the day. Ortiz went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored twice. Malone scored twice and drew two walks.

Game 2: Wake Forest 15, LMU 4

The Lions were unable to carry the momentum into the second game, falling behind early and never recovering against Wake Forest. Starter Jonah Johnson allowed eight runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings, and the Demon Deacons scored in five of seven innings.

LMU managed its only offense in the seventh, plating four runs off a tired Wake Forest bullpen. Wadas crushed his third home run of the day, a two-run shot to deep right, scoring Alex Gamboa, who had singled ahead of him. Two batters later, Andrew Mhoon put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run homer to right, his first collegiate home run, scoring Noah Malone to make it 11-4 before Wake Forest answered with four more in the bottom half.

Gamboa went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Jake Lyall added a single for LMU, which finished the game with five hits.

Wadas ended the doubleheader with three home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored across the two games.
