San Diego, California – Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Women's Tennis faced off against Pepperdine University, in a highly anticipated match in the WCC Tennis Tournament. The women of LMU dropped a 4-0 decision against the top-seeded Waves on Saturday.
The LMU Lions, coached by
Agustin Moreno, have had a strong season, with an overall record of 15-7 and a conference record of 7-2 through the WCC Tournament.
The Pepperdine Waves have also had a strong season, with an overall record of 18-3 and a conference record of 7-0.
Doubles action proved to be a challenge for the Lions as Pepperdine's Thamchaiwat and Zarr took down
Wiktoria Rutkowska and
Isabella Tcherkes-Zade, 6-2. Soon after, the waves pair of Campana and Redelijk defeated
Sofia Munera and
Anna Paradisi, 6-1 to clinch the doubles point. Although losing the doubles point, the Lions didn't lose their determination. LMU turned their eyes upon singles.
The LMU-Pepperdine rivalry is always intense, and both teams were looking to come out on top in this critical match in the WCC tournament. Pepperdine ultimately is crowned Champion and will move on to the NCAA Tournament following an intense singles matchup.
Sofia Munera exemplified intensity taking the first set over Pepperdine's Anna Campana, 6-3. Sofia was trying to slice the deficit for the Lions; however, she had to abandon her court after Pepperdine clinched the winning point.
In quick order, Pepperdine took courts, 5, 3, and 2 to claim the WCC Women's Tennis title.
"Our ladies played exceptionally well during the tournament and I'm incredibly proud of them," Moreno said. "Unfortunately, it takes four points to win the match and we came up short."
Following the Championship match, the WCC announced the WCC All-Tournament Team. LMU picked up an all-tournament team selection with
Sofia Munera.
LMU will await selections for the NCAA Tournament in singles and doubles.
