Box Score SAN DIEGO – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (11-20-1, 8-4 WCC) played 13 innings of baseball on Thursday night against University of San Diego without a determining a winner. The two teams had to suspend the series opener in an 8-8 tie prior to the start of the 14
th inning, with the action scheduled to pick back up Friday at 3:00 pm.
The Lions attacked first in Thursday's marathon game, with
Dylan Dennis hitting a solo shot to left center in the second inning.
The early offense continued in the third inning with a five-spot to push LMU ahead 6-0.
Jared Thomas scored two with a bases-loaded RBI double down the right field line. The next batter,
Diego Baqueiro, singled home the two runners in scoring position all before the first out was recorded. Dennis came to the plate with two outs again, and again came up with a clutch hit, adding another RBI on a single to shortstop.
The Toreros scored their first run in the bottom half of the third as LMU starter
Matt McClure induced a double-play with the bases loaded.
The Lions added a single run in the fourth inning on a
Jared Thomas RBI single to center. USD answered and erupted by plating six in the home half of the fourth and tying the game.
Dennis brought home his third run of the game in the top of the fifth, giving LMU four consecutive innings with a runner crossing the plate.
The score line held until the bottom of the ninth when San Diego used a two-out RBI single to tie the game and force extra innings.
LMU's bullpen was outstanding, combing for just the one run in over nine innings of relief work.
Alex Burge replaced McClure and pitched 2.1 hitless innings with two strikeouts.
Michael Nunez also went 2.1 innings and was charged with the run.
Owen Hackman pitched the final five innings striking out seven of his 18 batters faced to keep the game tied at 8-8.
The regularly scheduled game for Friday will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the of the resumed game.
