Box Score PROVO – The Loyola Marymount Women's Basketball team took another tough loss to No.20 ranked BYU Cougars, 77-54, as they continue to struggle in the West Coast Conference but show more fight every game.
The Lions came out with a fast tempo in the first quarter, as they were able to keep the Cougars on their heels early in the matchup.
Jasmine Jones and
Alexis Mark were able to make some key plays that allowed the Lions to stay afloat with the Lions. Jasmine hit a three-point dagger that gave the Lions the lead with three minutes remaining.
Both the Lions and the Cougars shot 50% from the field with the score, 12-15, at the end of the first quarter.
Lions, down by 3 to being the second quarter, were not able to keep up the pace, falling behind off a 10-2 run by the Cougars.
Ava Toone was able to kick-off a 6-0 run for the Lions, hitting a shot from the perimeter and the field, followed by another three-pointer from
Ariel Johnson to cut the lead to just 11 points, 35-24. Jones shot 100% from the field and the perimeter in the first half, finishing with seven points.
Headed in to the second half, the Lions trailed by 11 points but showed great effort.
Jasmine Jones kept the offense rolling for the Lions, getting to the line twice, while also grabbing six rebounds in the third quarter alone.
However, the Cougars were able to outscore the Lions 20-14 in the third quarter, adding to the 11-point lead, making the score, 38-59, at the end of the quarter.
Ariel Johnson got going early in the fourth quarter to help the Lions fight off the large deficit.
Ava Toone also continued her contribution to the Lions offense.
The Lions kept fighting hard on offense, pushing the ball up the court with intensity. However, the fourth quarter shooting performance by the Cougars was enough to close out the game, as they shot over 80% from the field.
Jones finished the game with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Johnson finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Ava Toone finished the game with 7 points, shooting 50% from the field. Nicole Rodriquez also scored 8 points, shooting 60% from the field. Alex Mark finished the game with 7 points and 6 rebounds, as she continues to add to her overall season rebound performance.
The Lions are now 3-11 in the conference, and 8-16 overall.
The Lions will play return home to host Pacific on Saturday, Feb 19. The conference game can be seen on the WCC Network, with tip-off from Gersten Pavilion set for 2 pm.
