AZUSA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions men's and women's Track and Field teams saw records fall at the Azusa Pacific University Last Chance Twilight over the weekend, highlighted by
Roc Johnson's school record in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Johnson put together an all-time performance Saturday night in pursuit of a regional qualifying mark for the NCAA Preliminary Round. He was chasing his first ever sub-9:00 performance in the steeple and came away with an LMU record time of 8:55.77, shaving an incredible 13 seconds off his previous career best. His performance eclipsed that of previous record holder, Michael Vorgitch (9:08.29), set in 2014.
Dani Rowlinson capped off her career with another personal best in the women's 5,000m. She crossed the line at 17:42.90, taking nearly 10 seconds off her previous record in her final race as a Lion.
In the men's 1,500m the Lions
Shane Ely ran a 3:56.83 to cap off his season and maintain his ranking at #11 on LMU's All-Time List. In the women's 1,500m the pair of
Avery Doan and
Shelby Page ended their seasons on a high note, with new career bests of 4:46.16 and 4:54.46, respectively.
On Thursday May 20th the NCAA will officially announce the accepted entries for the West Preliminary Championships, and as it stands, Johnson will likely qualify. If he does, that would make him LMU's first ever male regional qualifier in the 3,000m steeplechase. The semifinal race will start at 6:10pm on Friday, May 28th at Texas A&M University.
