Lions Resume WCC Play Against Gonzaga

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (7-12, 0-3 WCC) welcome Gonzaga to Page Stadium for a three-game weekend series as they venture back into West Coast Conference play.

The Lions will look to get back on track and return to their winning ways when they started the year off by taking a pair of three-game series from Pac-12 foes Utah and Washington.

LMU will look to build off that momentum over the weekend and pick up their third series win of 2021.

The Lions have been getting a steady amount of production for the top of the lineup, especially from leadoff hitter Kenny Oyama. He's been setting the table for the rest of the Lions lineup throughout the year.

Oyama currently is sixth in the WCC in batting average at .361 and fourth in the conference in hits with 26. He's a steady fixture on the bases and head coach Nathan Choate's aggressiveness with him on the base paths has Oyama first in the WCC in stolen bases and he'll be looked upon to continue that production this weekend.

Julian Bury has also provided ample production for LMU. The senior is second on the team in both batting average at .329 and hits with 25. Bury's also been a fixture on the bases with his patience at the plate which sees him second on the team in walks with eight. He makes the most of his time on the bases and constantly puts pressure on defenses with his four stolen bases which is second on the team.

On the mound, the Lions have been getting steady efforts from their starting pitchers and bullpen. CJ Fernandezees has been a fixture on Friday nights starting for the Lions. His 2.59 ERA is fifth on the team as well as his strikeout total of 13. In four of his five starts on the year he's gone at least five innings and has thrown 24 1/3 which is second on the team.

Holden Christian is having a banner year for the Lions and has been nearly unhittable when the ball is in his hands. Christian has an ERA of 0.00 and is tied for the team lead in strikeouts with 18 and appearances with eight. He also is second on the team in opposing batting average at .146.

The Lions and Bulldogs will begin their series on Friday, March 26 when Fernandezees goes opposite against Gonzaga's Gabriel Hughes. First pitch at Page is slated for 6:00 p.m.

The entire three-game series against the Bulldogs will be streamed live with links to the broadcasts available on the baseball schedule page at lmulions.com.
