Lions Set for Matchup with Bruins

LOS ANGELES – The Loyola Marymount University Lions (1-2, 0-0 WCC) fresh off their walk-off win against USC will set their sights on another Pac-12 opponent when they travel up the 405 to take on UCLA Tuesday night.

The matchup with the Bruins will be the first of four between the two schools this year and will mark the fourth of 15 straight games against the Pac-12 to open the season.

The Lions and Bruins are no strangers having played each other six times in the last two years including a victory over then No. 1 UCLA in the NCAA Tournament's Los Angeles Regional.

The game will see the Lions tangle with the No. 14 Bruins, giving head coach Nathan Choate his first battle against a nationally ranked opponent this season. First pitch for tomorrow night's game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The game will not be streamed but audio will be provided by UCLA and links to the broadcast are on LMU baseball's schedule page.

The trio of Kenny Oyama, Alec Cargin, and Diego Baqueiro have stormed out of the gates early for the Lions. All three feasted on USC pitching over the weekend with Oyama responsible for six hits, while Cargin and Baqueiro posted five a piece.

Oyama capped off the weekend with a walk-off single to beat the Trojans and heads into the week with a batting average of .600 with Cargin at .455 followed by Baquerio's .385.

LMU's starting rotation was effective over the weekend against the Trojans with CJ Fernandezees tossing five plus no hit innings before surrendering a two out hit on Friday night. Jimmy Galicia, in his first start for LMU, threw six strong innings and had three strikeouts, holding USC to a .227 batting average.

Owen Hackman picked up his first win of the season and was clutch for the Lions on Sunday afternoon. Hackman came in relief in the top of the ninth and worked himself out of a jam in the tenth only to end his outing strong in the eleventh for the victory.

LMU will look to add to their win total before they return home this weekend for a three game series against Utah.
