LOS ANGELES – In the final minute of play, LMU came back to take a one-point lead before New Mexico State closed out the game on an 8-2 run to take the game, 63-58.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead as
Dameane Douglas,
Cam Shelton, and
Eli Scott all hit field goals in the opening three minutes of the game.
LMU doubled the Aggies up as
Kwane Marble II hit a layup to make it 10-5, and then the two sides traded threes as
Keli Leaupepe built the lead back up to five at 13-8.
New Mexico State took their first lead at 14-13 and carried a 25-23 into halftime.
The Aggies came out of the locker room and built up a 10-point lead with 12 of the first 16 points.
Alex Merkviladze and
Joe Quintana knocked down back-to-back threes to cut it to a 37-33 game with 13:40 to play.
A 5-0 run cut it to a one-possession game, as Marble hit a three with 11:34 on the clock.
Douglas sparked an 8-0 run to give the Lions a second-half lead for the first time as Douglas dunked home a drive and Scott followed with the next six points to push LMU on top 52-51 with 5:14 remaining.
The Aggies took the three-point lead back before Leaupepe buried a three with less than a minute remaining to even the score at 55-all.
Cam Shelton closed hit a free throw to push LMU up by a point.
Shelton's layup with a tenth of a second left was LMU's only points after taking the lead as New Mexico State closed out the game.
LMU forced 26 turnovers and scored 32 points off those turnovers. However, the field goal percentage disparity was too much as New Mexico State held LMU to 33.3 percent from the field. New Mexico State scored 34 points in the paint.
The game featured nine lead changes and seven ties.
The Lions have their next two games away from home to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule. The Lions will play at Nevada on Dec. 18 before traveling to Bellarmine.
