Minnesota’s Final Possession Takes Game from Lions

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Trailing by three with under half a minute to play, Keli Leaupepe delivered with an and-one to tie the score at 64-all. Minnesota (3-0) went down the court and dribbled down the clock until Marcus Carr stepped back for two of his game-high 26 points with 2.7 remaining. The Lions (1-2) were unable to get a shot off to force a potential tie, and fell to the Gopher, 67-64, to complete the two-game trip.

Trailing by as many as nine in the second half, LMU retook the lead for the first time since it was 12-10. With their 10-2 run of the half, the Lions pushed ahead 55-54, then added a Mattias Markusson layup to go up three with 6:43 on the clock.

The Lions would hold the lead with 4:19 to play before Minnesota tied the score at 59-59. Eli Scott answered with a jumper as part of his 13-point and 12-rebound night.

Scott grabbed nine first half rebounds, with six coming on the offensive glass. He finished the game with his 15th career double-double, which is good for sole possession of ninth all-time in program history.

The Gophers would score the next five points, creating the hole that Leaupepe was able to dig the team out of, before Carr's eventual game winner.

LMU shot just 22 percent in the first half (6-for-22), including 1-for-9 from three, but capitalized at the line making 13-for-14 free throws and outrebounding the Gophers by 10 before the break.

In the second half, LMU raised its field goal percentage after going 12-for-26 after intermission, but shot just 10-18 from the line after the midway point. Leaupepe was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line in the game.

Dameane Douglas and Jalin Anderson each contributed 10 points.

LMU outrebounded Minnesota, 43-30, and collected 18 on the offensive glass as opposed to eight from the home team.

The lead changed six times in the game.

The Lions will now return to Los Angeles and host Long Beach State on Friday from Gersten Pavilion. The start time for that game has been moved to 6 p.m.
