Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. – The Loyola Marymount University volleyball team (2-1) won its last match of the Cactus Cup in Tucson, Ariz., as the team beat Appalachian State 3-1, going 2-1 on the weekend.
"This it was a challenging opening weekend to take on, and our team responded really well as a whole," said head coach
Aaron Mansfield. "These preseason tournaments are packed with a lot of volleyball in a short period of time and our team committed to our preparation before each match no matter what. We will learn more about what we did well this weekend and areas where we can grow after we take an in depth look at some numbers and film. We are excited to take on another challenging weekend in Houston next week".
LMU vs. Appalachian State – 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 24-21
The Lions set the tone in their first set, as they allowed Appalachian State's only lead to be the first point of the match. LMU quickly tied things up after a kill from
Rose Booth, and then took the lead after another kill from Booth.
The Mountaineers tied things up five times. With the scored tied at 9-9, the Lions broke away after a kill from
Savannah Slattery, and maintained the lead the rest of the set, winning 21-15.
The Lions opened up set two with a 5-0 run and only allowed ASU to tie the score up twice, but never let the Mountaineers to take the lead. LMU continued the momentum, winning set two 25-21.
Up 2-0, LMU battled in set three, as ASU went on a 5-0 run before Booth put the first point on the board. The Lions took tied the score up four times and took the lead twice, but ended up dropping set three 25-22.
Up 2-1, the Lions bounced back in the fourth set, starting with a kill from
Sierra Bartley. LMU then went on a 4-0 run and won the set 25-21, giving the Lions a 3-1 win over Appalachian State.
Slattery led the Lions in kills with 16, while Booth had 14.
Mary Shroll led the team in digs with 27, while
Jessie Prichard put up 37 of the Lions' 50 assists.
Meredith Teague led the team in blocks with two.

The Lions will be back on the road next week to head to Houston, TX., to take on Rice University and Abilene Christian University at the Rice University Tournament.
