HONOLULU — LMU lost to Hawaii 3-2 on Friday. The Lions answered 10-25 and 18-25 set losses with 25-22 and 28-26 wins before Hawaii took the fifth set 15-11.
Set 1
Maria Tabacuks answered Hawaii's first point with a kill from
Delfina Schuh and added another to tie the opening set at 2-2. Hawaii moved ahead 5-2 on kills by Miliana Sylvester and Panna Ratkai and a block-assisted Lions attack error, then extended the margin to 12-4 with Rachel Purser contributing three kills during that stretch.
Aleksandra Stojanovic put down kills for the Lions' points at 4-9 and 5-12, but Hawaii continued to widen the gap and reached 17-5 on a Purser kill.
Leah Burrell and
Nicole Schuetz added late kills, and Stojanovic teamed with
Ayanna Henry for a block before Sylvester and Purser scored the final two points of Hawaii's 25-10 set win.
Set 2
Hawaii scored the first three points of the second set before the Lions worked back to 4-4 on a Schuetz kill set by Schuh. The teams traded stretches from there, with Hawaii moving ahead 14-9 behind points from Tali Hakas, Panna Ratkai, Maeli Cormier and Miliana Sylvester. The Lions cut the gap to 14-12 after an Adrianna Arquette bad set, a block by Schuetz and
Camille Pomeroy, and a Tabacuks service ace, but Hawaii answered to build a 20-13 lead. Henry, Schuetz and Tabacuks added late kills for the Lions, but Hawaii reached set point at 24-17 and finished the set 25-18.
Set 3
After Hawaii scored the first two points, the Lions worked back through kills by Schuetz, Tabacuks and Stojanovic, plus a
Gabriella Cascione ace, to move in front 8-7. Hawaii went ahead 12-10, but a Leilani Lopez service error gave the Lions the serve, and Cascione served four consecutive Lions points as Tabacuks and Schuetz had kills and Henry blocked a Maeli Cormier attack for a 15-12 lead. Hawaii drew even at 16-16 and again at 19-19, and a Cormier kill plus a Panna Ratkai ace later put Hawaii ahead 21-20 before
Zaria Thornton tied the set with a kill. After Hawaii moved back in front 22-21, the Lions closed with four straight points: a Tali Hakas error, a block by Schuetz and Stojanovic Miliana Sylvester error and a Tabacuks kill off Schuh's assist to finish the 25-22 set win.
Set 4
Hawaii built an 8-4 lead early in the fourth set before the Lions pulled even at 8-8 with
Kayla Lopez serving an ace, Thornton and Schuh combining on a block, and Thornton adding a kill. After Hawaii moved back ahead 12-11, the Lions won seven of the next eight rallies to go up 18-13, getting a Cascione ace, blocks involving Stojanovic, Henry and Thornton, and kills from Schuetz and Stojanovic. Hawaii worked back into the set and tied it at 20-20 on an Adrianna Arquette ace, then the teams traded points through 24-24 before Hawaii went ahead 26-25. Schuetz tied the set with a kill,
Anya Santrac served an ace for a 27-26 lead, and Tabacuks finished the set with a kill from Schuh for a 28-26 Lions win.
Set 5
Tabacuks opened the fifth set with a kill from Schuh, but Hawaii scored the next four points behind a Victoria Leyva ace and two Panna Ratkai kills to move ahead 4-1. Thornton and Schuetz helped the Lions trade points in the middle of the set, but Hawaii added two Ratkai service aces during a push to 8-3 and later went up 12-6 on a Tali Hakas ace. After Hawaii reached 14-8, the Lions scored three straight on an Adrianna Arquette service error, a block by Henry and Thornton, and a Schuetz kill from Tabacuks before a service error ended the set at 15-11.
Schuetz led the Lions with 18 kills and 19.0 points while adding nine digs. Tabacuks recorded 16 kills, 17 digs, two aces and 18.0 points. Schuh finished with 46 assists, 10 digs and two block assists. Henry posted six total blocks, including two solo blocks, and added three kills.
The Lions are 4-1 overall. Hawaii is 3-2 overall.
