DANDENONG, Victoria, Australia – Loyola Marymount continued their foreign trip with the second of three games in the greater Melbourne area. The Lions trailed after each of the first two quarters, but a team-effort in the second half gave LMU the double-digit win, 91-80.
"Third quarter was it," said Head Coach
Mike Dunlap. "The conditioning showed and the pattern was consistent. They had 13 points and we had 34. We just came out and made that push."
James Batemon scored a would-be career-high 31 points to lead all scorers. Batemon scored a consistent 8 points a quarter through the first three periods, before finishing at 31 for the game. The senior also totaled game-highs in assists with five and minutes with just over 34.
Joe Quintana added in a dozen points of his own and was one of three Lions at three assists, joining
Eli Scott and
Jeffery McClendon.
All 11 players to see the court for LMU scored, with
Donald Gipson hitting the double-figure mark for the first time on this Australia trip.
The Rangers held the advantage at the half after shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the field to take a 47-41 lead to the locker room. The LMU defense lowered the Dandedong shooting percentage to 47.5 percent (29-for-61) for the game. As a team, the Lions shot at a 45.0 percent (36-for-80) clip.
LMU capitalized on 19 second-chance points and 36 bench points in the win, in a game that featured four ties and three lead changes.
The Lions have one more game on the schedule in Melbourne, Thursday night against NBL opponent Melbourne United.
