RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After playing from behind for over 85 percent of the game, Loyola Marymount (11-2) drops a road contest to UC Riverside (5-8), 60-53, on Saturday afternoon.
After a battle in the first half,
Dameane Douglas buried a corner three on the final possession of to even the score at 31-31 heading into the locker rooms. The first half featured three tie scores and six lead changes, with UC Riverside using seven three pointers to keep it tight.
The Highlanders opened the half with five straight and 16 of the first 22 to build up a double digit lead. The Lions climbed back, and benefitted from a 10-0 run capped by five straight from the freshman Douglas to even the score at 49-49
UCR closed out the game on a 11-4 run from that point to earn the win, without allowing the Lions to regain the lead in the second half.
LMU shot 3-for-16 from three in the second half, including 0-for-8 from in the second half, and finished 10-for-20 from the line.
Douglas finished with a team-high 12 points, while
James Batemon added 10 and
Zafir Williams scored nine.
Mattias Markusson scored the first six points for LMU and finished with eight on the day.
The Lions will benefit from a few days off for the holidays before returning to Gersten Pavilion for the final non-conference game of the season, a Dec. 28 showdown with UC Davis at 7 p.m.
