LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount University is 8-0 for the first time in program thanks to the full team contributing to a 106-100 win on Thursday night over Bethesda University.
"We just played against the game," said Head Coach
Mike Dunlap. "We knew that we wanted to play our brand of basketball with tough, hard-nosed defense. They ended up shooting 29 percent, so at the minimum you can say that that is quality. Then offensively, share the ball and keep sharing the ball. Those objectives were achieved."
Five Lions scored in double-digits for the first time since LMU's WCC Tournament win over Portland last season.
Jordan Bell led all scorers with his 16 points, the best mark for the sophomore since transferring to the program. Bell added two of LMU's 10 steals and accounted for the lone LMU block.
Ivan Alipiev posted a career-high after going 3-for-3 from deep in the first half for nine points. The freshman finished with career-highs 15 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
For the first time this season, a Lion posted a perfect shooting percentage with at least five made field goals as
Petr Herman scored 10 points on a 5-for-5 night.
Zafir Williams scored all 10 of his points in the first half as a part of 66 percent (23-for-35) team shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes. LMU shot a 54 percent (7-for-13) mark from three, and finished at 55 percent (44-for-80).
The LMU defense forced 23 turnovers, recorded 10 steals, and held the Flames to 28.8 percent (15-for-52) from the field. After intermission, Bethesda was limited to just 22.2 percent (6-for-27) shooting from the field.
James Batemon recorded 10 points.
Mattias Markusson finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
In his season-debut,
Eli Scott played 16 minutes and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and dished out two dimes.
LMU hit 100 points plateau for the first time since dropping three digits on San Francisco in February of 2016. The 106 points scored is the most by an LMU team since the Lions scored 108 points against Pacifica in November 2012. LMU's 44 made field goals is the second-most this century and the 33 assists the tops in the new millennium.
Joe Quintana led the way with a career-best six assists and
Donald Gipson added four of his own as 10 different Lions finished with a pair of assists or more.
The Lions still have a tough weekend ahead, with a trip across town to Pauley Pavilion to face the UCLA Bruins. The 7 p.m. game will air nationally on Pac12 Networks.
