LMU women's tennis had a strong showing from the Long Beach State Invitational over the weekend, highlighted by
Siobhan Anderson reaching the final of Flight A singles.
Anderson defeated Grand Canyon's Emilia Occhipinti, 6-4, 6-3, before knocking off Jolene Coetzee (CSUN), 6-4, 6-0. After advancing on Saturday, Anderson topped Cal State Fullerton's Monika Van de Vondel, 6-0, 6-3, to reach the final match against Washington State's Tiffany Mylonas. The pair battled tough in that final, but Anderson ultimately suffered the 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 setback.
Yesica De Lucas and
Camila Tumosa both competed in Flight B singles, with De Lucas winning a pair of matches. The native of Madrid, Spain topped PSU's Alli Valk, 6-0, 6-2 before knocking off Ludovica Infantino (GCU), 6-2, 6-1. Her run in the bracket came to an end one match later, falling to Melisa Ates (WSU), 6-4, 6-4, but she would later defeat Martina LoPumo (GCU), 6-3, 6-0 in an extra match from the tournament.
Further down the bracket, Tumosa opened play with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 win over Emma Roenholt of CSUN, but dropped her next match, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1 to Celina Buhr of Grand Canyon. Returning to the court in an extra match outside of the bracket, Tumosa also fell to Wiktoria Rutkowska (LBSU), 6-2, 6-4.
Sofiya Gaisina, playing in Flight C, advanced past her first opponent by default before posting a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gerda Upenience (PSU). From there, Gaisina met Emma Bardet of host Long Beach State, dropping the match, 6-2, 6-1. The native of Ufa, Russia would then return to the court in an extra match, topping Autum Prudhomme (GCU), 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Anderson/De Lucas won a first-round match over Van de Vonde/Coetzee (CSUN), 6-4, but then fell in the next round to a pair from Long Beach State. Competing in an extra match at the tournament, the duo topped Buhr/Mokrov (GCU), 6-4. Tumosa/Gaisina also played doubles over the weekend, notching a 6-2 win over Upeniece/Knecht (PSU) before falling to Tomey/Ates (WSU), 6-4.
The Lions will return to action on October 12 when it travels to the USC Invitational.
