Opening the 2018 spring season on the road at USC (2-0), LMU (0-1) dropped a 5-2 decision to the Trojans from Marks Tennis Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
LMU's two points came in singles play, as #29 Veronica Miroshnichenko defeated #35 Gabby Smith, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11) at the top spot in the singles order. The Lions also claimed a win at the sixth spot in the order, as fellow freshman Yesica De Lucas topped Sydney Van Alphen, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4-2) in comeback fashion.
Playing at #4 in the lineup, Anna Romeka gave #85 Madison Westby a solid match, eventually dropping the point by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Although LMU dropped the doubles point by way of losses at the first and third spots in the order, LMU's Siobhan Anderson and Romeka led USC's #2 squad, 5-4, before the contest went unfinished due to the point already being decided.
In a match of ranked doubles teams at the top spot, Miroshnichenko and Eva Marie Voracek (#10) came up short against Rianna Valdes and Angela Kulikov (#46), 6-4, to decide the doubles point.
LMU will now prepare for its home opener on January 28 when the Lions host Cal Poly at 11 a.m. from the LMU Tennis Center.
