Playing as the third seed in the 2017 WCC Beach Volleyball Championship Tournament, LMU (15-14) reached the Championship Final match on Saturday afternoon, ultimately dropping the championship to top-seeded Pepperdine.

The Lions won a pair of matches on Friday to advance to Saturday's play, meeting the Waves in the first match of the day. There, LMU dropped a 4-1 decision to #3 Pepperdine. Sarah Sponcil and Savannah Slattery took down Delaney Knudsen/Madalyn Roh, 19-21, 24-22, 15-13, at the top spot, but the Lions dropped matches on the final four courts.

Now needing to win to force a rematch with Pepperdine in the Championship, LMU recorded a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's. The Lions cruised to the win over the Gaels, taking victories on courts 1, 3, 4 and 5.

With LMU playing in its third match of the day, Pepperdine proved too much in the Championship Final. The Waves captured straight-set wins on each of the final four courts to secure their second consecutive WCC Championship. Sponcil and Slattery once again earned a victory over Knudsen/Roh, this time outlasting the Pepperdine pair, 21-17, 29-31, 15-8.

The duo of Sponcil/Slattery is now 20-9 on the season.
