Abbott Pitches Lions to Series Win at Pepperdine

Box Score April 22, 2017

Box Score

Junior right-hander Cory Abbott saw his streak of innings without allowing an earned run end at 43 straight frames, but the native of San Diego, Calif. dealt 6.0 more stellar innings, allowing just one run on four hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts, as LMU (26-13, 13-4 WCC) beat Pepperdine (17-20, 6-8 WCC), 5-1, on Saturday from Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, Calif.

With the win, LMU earned 1.5 points in the PCH Cup standings. The win also moved LMU to 9-0-1 in weekend series this year.

Abbott, who moved to 8-1 with the win, retired 14 straight Pepperdine hitters from the final out in the first inning through one out in the sixth. Nine of the 14 hitters were set down via the strikeout, ultimately running Abbott's pitch count to 108 after six frames.

LMU's bullpen proved solid, as Ted Boeke contributed two-thirds of a frame before Braydon Salzman dealt the final 2.1 scoreless innings to close the game and earn his second save.

Offensively, LMU received three-hit days from leadoff man Phil Caulfield and Brandon Shearer. Caulfield finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Shearer was 3-for-4 with an RBI. While the offensive numbers were stellar, Shearer also saved at least one run with a diving stop to end the sixth and maintain a 4-1 Lion lead.

Jamey Smart continued his blistering pace in WCC play, going 2-for-5 with two RBI, driving in the lone run in the third and the first of two for the Lions in the fifth. Smart is now hitting .406 with nine RBI against WCC opponents.

Billy Wilson and Niko Decolati also contributed RBI-singles, with Decolati tacking on an insurance run in the eighth with his swing of the bat.

Abbott's earned run streak was ultimately broken in the bottom of the sixth with two out after Jordan Qsar lined an RBI-double into the gap in right-centerfield to bring home Quincy McAfee.

LMU will look to earn its second sweep of the year on Sunday when it sends right-hander Blake Redman to the mound at 1 p.m.
