Senior Phil Caulfield led the way as LMU (2-1) stole seven bases en route to capturing a series win over #19 UC Santa Barbara (1-2) by way of an 8-2 victory on Sunday afternoon from Page Stadium.
Caulfield went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI and three of LMU's seven stolen bases while hitting out of the leadoff spot in the order. Junior Billy Wilson flexed his muscle for his only hit of the afternoon, lacing a two-run shot over the wall in right field in the sixth inning. Wilson also added his second stolen base of the year, as he, Niko Decolati, Dylan Hirsch and Jimmy Hill all stole a bag.
The seven stolen bases match a program-best for the Lions previously achieved three times, including most recently on March 3, 2013 vs. Bradley.
While LMU's offense proved to be the main story on Sunday, junior right-hander Cory Abbott dealt 5.0 innings of one-run ball to hold his own on the mound. Abbott struck out four and limited the Gauchos to just four hits en route to earning the victory.
Fellow junior Joe Record got the start for UCSB, taking the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings of work.
The Lions wasted no time taking a lead, plating a pair of runs in the first on an RBI-groundout from Jamey Smart and a clutch two-out RBI-single from freshman Trevin Esquerra.
After plating one more in the second, LMU put a run on the board in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to claim a 7-1 lead after six innings. Caulfield contributed an RBI-single in the fourth before Steven Chavez entered as a pinch-hitter in the fifth and notched an RBI-single of his own â€" one of two hits for Chavez on the day. Wilson capped the middle-inning offensive outpouring with the no-doubt two-run shot in the sixth off of left-hander Ben Brecht.
Caulfield came to the plate for the final time with two out in the eighth inning, reaching on a single before moving to third on an errant pickoff throw and scoring on a passed ball to finish his stellar day.
The native of Burlingame, Calif. matched a career-high with his four hits, equaling his effort from April 23, 2016 at Pacific. A preseason All-WCC selection, he is now batting .500 for the season.
LMU will stay at home on Wednesday, hosting Tennessee at 6 p.m. from Page Stadium.
