SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's soccer had a chance to hand University of San Diego their first loss in conference play on Thursday. After scoring the games first two goals, USD (6-8, 4-0 WCC) held off LMU's (6-6-3, 1-4) late surge, to defeat the Lions, 3-2.
Just three and a half minutes into the game, USD was awarded a penalty kick and converted for the early lead. Despite a bevy of LMU shots, the scoreline remained the same going into the halftime break.
After intermission, the Toreros were quick to score their second, doubling their lead at the 51 minute mark. This time, LMU had an answer. Maddie Medved found Melissa Lewis less than a minute later for the goal, cutting USD's lead in half.
San Diego added a third in the 61st minute, again putting the pressure on the Lions.
In a late push, Medved finished a bouncing ball around the box, scoring in the 84th minute. LMU was unable to get the equalizer in the closing minutes.
Loyola Marymount outshot San Diego 17-5 in the game. Phoebe Riley, Pilar Torres, and Sarah Sanger joined Medved to share the game-high with three shots apiece.
The Lions will pack their bags and travel to Provo for a Saturday evening game at BYU. The match will air on TheW.tv and kick off at 6 p.m. pacific.
