Junior Blake Redman tossed seven shutout innings with a career-best seven strikeouts as LMU (9-12) defeated UC Irvine (14-7) by a count of 7-2 on the road at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. on Tuesday. With the victory, LMU evened the season series with the Anteaters.
The right-hander allowed just five hits and one hit batter over the seven frames, ultimately moving to 2-3 on the year with the win. Junior Brenton Arriaga followed for LMU, surrendering a two-run homer to Keston Hiura in the eighth as the only blemish to LMU's pitching line. Hiura has now belted three of his six homers against the Lions.
Although Hiura had the lone homer of the night, it was LMU's offense that won out on Tuesday night, as the Lions scored seven runs on nine hits, including three doubles.
Austin Miller went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double, while Cassidy Brown finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a double. Sophomore Jamey Smart was the final Lion with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
LMU got on the board first in the first inning, as Miller led off with a double before eventually coming around to score on a ground ball from Niko Decolati. Decolati went hitless in the game, but finished with two RBI out of the cleanup spot in the order.
LMU stretched a 1-0 lead to 2-0 with a run in the fourth as Brown led off with a hit-by-pitch before eventually coming around to score on a groundout from Kyle Dozier.
One-out singles from Miller and Phil Caulfield set the table for a two-run fifth inning, as Brown belted an RBI-double off the wall in left field in front of a sacrifice fly from Decolati to cap the scoring run.
LMU put the game out of reach in the eighth, plating three more runs to push the lead to 7-0. LMU benefitted from a pair of Anteater errors, and Smart contributed an RBI-single in the inning, but it was a Seaver Whalen RBI-double that highlighted the frame. Whalen, pinch hitting for Jimmy Hill, delivered a two-bagger down the left field line to bring home Ted Boeke and the final run of the inning.
Although UC Irvine would respond with the two-run homer from Hiura, LMU cruised to victory from there, including turning an impressive 3-6 double play to end the game.
LMU, winners of three straight, will open a three-game West Coast Conference series at BYU on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT.
