LOS ANGELES - The LMU softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the LMU Softball Tournament, earning a 5-4 win over Monmouth to complete a halted game from Friday, and closing out the afternoon with a 12-11 setback to Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Lions move to 14-8 on the season with the split.
The morning began with the conclusion of a game that began on Friday afternoon, but was halted after five complete innings due to rain. Picking up in the top of the sixth with the score knotted at 4-4, it would be the Lions who would snap the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with the international tie breaker in effect.
Shianne Ybarra delivered the game-winning RBI hit that scored Stephanie Maciel from third. Maciel, who began the inning on second, advanced to third when Amanda Dirks reached on an error.
Hannah Bandimere was the winning pitcher in the contest, tossing the final 3.2 innings, including the three scoreless frames Sunday morning.
LMU had held the early lead over the Hawks as Megahn von Behren had opened the game with a solo home run and Maciel added a solo homer in the third. The Lions got two more runs in the fourth to lead 4-1, before Monmouth rallied for three runs in the fifth, tying the game just before the rain delay.
In the final game of the tournament, the Lions found themselves in a huge 11-1 hole to Fairleigh Dickinson through two-and-a-half innings Sunday afternoon. But they would slowly chip away at the plate while Stephanie Crist turned in 4.1 solid innings of relief in the circle.
LMU scored four runs in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth while the Knights added a 12th run in the top of the sixth. Trailing 12-10 entering the final frame, the Lions loaded the bases and pushed one run across on a von Behren RBI-single. But Maciel would ground out to second for the final out, leaving the big rally one run short.
Bandoleer took the loss in the circle, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) in the first 1.1 innings. Crist, who was the third reliever to enter the game, fanned three, walked one and scattered four hits of one run over the final 4.1 innings.
von Behren extended her current team-high reached-bases streak to 15 games, collecting three hits and a walk in the game. Alicia Brown and Alex Finie also had three hits apiece.
LMU's nine-game homestand continues Tuesday when they face Harvard at noon and Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 p.m.
