Lions Bounce Back to Split Series with Oregon State

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU softball bounced back in a big way on Friday afternoon at Smith Field, taking down Oregon State, 7-4, in Game 2 of the series to even things up at one win apiece.

The Lions set the tone early behind a strong start in the circle from Jessie Gilbert. The right-hander was dominant through her first two innings of work, facing just six batters while striking out five of them and keeping Oregon State completely off balance. She returned in the third inning, where the Beavers were able to generate some offense, but her opening frames had already established the momentum for LMU.

After Oregon State scratched across the game's first run in the top of the third, LMU wasted no time responding. The Lions erupted for three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by an RBI single from Izzy Jamgotchian before Sydney Poole delivered the big swing with a two-RBI single up the middle to give LMU a 3-1 lead.

LMU continued to apply pressure throughout the game, but it was the fifth inning that broke things open. With traffic on the bases, Kealani Caster roped a two-RBI double to left, and Cristina Jones followed with a two-run single of her own, capping off a four-run frame that pushed the Lions' advantage to 7-1.

At the plate, LMU's offense was clicking from top to bottom, finishing with 12 hits on the day. Poole led the way with a three-hit, two-RBI performance, while Avery Francis and Jones each added multi-hit efforts to pace the lineup.

In the circle, Angela Carrera earned the win with three strong innings of relief, holding the Beavers scoreless and allowing just one hit, before Savannah Hooks closed things out. Oregon State made things interesting late with a three-run homer in the seventh, but LMU had already built enough cushion to secure the victory.

With the win, the Lions improve to 33-18 overall and 10-7 in WCC play, evening the series and setting up a decisive rubber match. LMU will be back at Smith Field tomorrow, May 9 at 11 AM, for the final game of the series and the final game of the season. The matchup will determine the series winner and will also serve as Senior Day, as the Lions honor their graduating class.
