Women's Basketball Awaits Long Beach State Saturday

LOS ANGELES -
The LMU women's basketball team will look for its fourth straight win as it returns to Gersten Pavilion on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Long Beach State for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

The game will server as LMU's "Beat Hunger, Beat LBS" day, bring two non-perishable food items to receive a $5 discounted ticket. All donations will go towards renewed destiny international, a youth organization designed to change the lives of troubled youth across america who are helping to feed hungry families this holiday season.

Last Time Out
In its final road non-conference game of the season, Makenzie Cast's career-day powered the LMU women's basketball team past Cal State Fullerton, 77-62, Sunday afternoon at Titan Gym.

Cast finished with a career-best 24 points, shooting 9-of-17 from the floor, including 6-of-12 from deep to match a career-high with six triples. Jackie Johnson also set a career-high with 18 rebounds to go with 14 points for her sixth double-double of the season. Leslie Lopez-Wood poured in 15 points, including 10 in the third quarter, guiding the Lions to their third straight victory.

Jackie Johnson was named the WCC Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 4. The senior guided LMU to a 3-0 week, notching double-digit scoring figures in all three contests, while posting double-doubles against UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton. Johnson leads the conference with six double-doubles.

Double Trouble
Jackie Johnson is the only player in the WCC who is currently averaging a double-double per game with 14.7 points and 11.4 rebounds per contest.

Carrying the Load
Jackie Johnsonb leads the WCC in rebounds per game (11.4), blocked shots (2.8) and ranks second in steals (2.3).

Dynamic Duo
Cheyanne Wallace and Jackie Johnson currently rank third and eighth in the WCC with 14.7 and 13.9 points per game. BYU is the only other team in the conference to have two student-athletes rank within the top 10 in scoring average.

Dropping Dimes
Andee Velasco leads the WCC in assists (49) and assists per game (5.4).

Lockdown
LMU currently ranks second in the WCC in field goal percentage defense (.359) and in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.297).

Lockdown
LMU's back-to-back wins over Seattle (62-59) and UCSB (57-55) marked the first time since the 2011-12 season when the Lions earned two straight wins decided by one-possession. Previously, the Lions came away on top with two straight 57-54 decisions over Youngstown State Nov. 25 and New Mexico Dec. 1.

Locking the Lid
The Lions surrendered just three points against UC Irvine in the first quarter in a 58-39 win in its opening game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 25, setting a new program record for fewest points allowed in a quarter, besting its mark of allowing just eight points a season ago against the Anteaters on Nov. 28, 2015. LMU'S 39 points allowed in the game marked its lowest opponent total since a 65-39 win over Jackson State Nov. 11, 2007.

Light it Up
Cheyanne Wallace's 20 points against San Diego State on Nov. 20 marked her sixth 20-plus point game of her career. Wallace also notched a career-high 26 points against Saint Louis on Nov. 13.

From Downtown
Leslie Lopez-Wood broke the all-time 3-point career record a season ago and holds 224 to her name. The senior has lead the Lions in triples in each of her three seasons, and also set the single season mark with 82 makes from beyond-the-arc a season ago.

Scouting Long Beach State
The 49ers also enter Saturday's contest with a 5-4 record and are riding a two-game win streak after downing Boston University, 61-48, on Sunday and Pacific, 66-58, on Wednesday.

Gigi Hascheff tops Long Beach State with 9.8 points per game. Raven Benton follows with a 9.0 average and Jewelyn Sawyer ranks third with 8.7 points per contest. Sawyer also leads the squad with 7.6 rebounds per game and was named to the ASU Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Series
LMU holds a 5-4 grip on the all-time series after coming out on top in five of the last six matchups. The Lions have dominated Long Beach State at home, posting a 7-1 mark in the series, while its only loss at Gersten came in the series debut, a 64-57 decision Dec. 4, 1993.

What's at Stake
With six wins over its first 10 games, LMU would match its best start since the 2009-10 season.

Up Next
The Lions will return home to kickoff an Alumni Day doubleheader with the men's team. The women's team will start the day off against UC Riverside at 1 p.m. and the men's team will follow against Incarnate Wood at 4 p.m.

Preseason Predictions

LMU was predicted to finish sixth overall in the WCC women's basketball preseason poll, as voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Gonzaga edged BYU for the top spot by one point, earning 76 points and five first-place votes. The Cougars received four first-place votes and Saint Mary's nabbed the final first-place vote and 66 overall points. San Diego (58) and Santa Clara (44) checked in ahead of LMU (36), who earned its highest ranking since 2013, when it was also selected to finish sixth.

Defending WCC tournament champion San Francisco was narrowed by the Lions by one point to hold the seventh spot, while it beat out Pacific by a one-point margin as the Tigers penned the eight spot. Pepperdine and Portland finished in a tie for ninth with 13 points apiece.
