LOS ANGELES - Check one New Year's resolutions off the list. In just her 75th game in an Lion uniform, junior Leslie Lopez-Wood broke the program's all-time three-pointer record and the LMU women's basketball team earned a 79-69 win over visiting Pepperdine on Saturday in Gersten Pavilion.
The win moved LMU to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in West Coast Conference play, marking their first 2-1 league start since the 2010-11 season. The Waves dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in WCC action.
It was an all-around team effort for the Lions who saw four players score in double figures and eight total players tally at least three points. Cheyenne Wallace led the way with 17 points off the bench. The freshman also had four blocks. Lopez-Wood finished with 15 points, including three three-pointers while Sophie Taylor turned in a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double. Bree Alford chipped in 11 points and seven boards.
Neither side shot the ball particularly well as LMU hit just 38 percent from the field and the Waves just 33 percent. But free throws were key as the Lions went 28-for-32 (87.5 percent) from the charity stripe while Pepperdine was 14-for-14.
The Lions never trailed in the game, scoring the first points on a pair of free throws from Deanna Johnson. The Waves responded with a jumper from Olivia Ogwumike, tying the score at 2-2 just over a minute into play. But back-to-back threes by Lopez-Wood and Andee Velasco opened up a six-point Lion advantage and they would never trail.
Lopez-Wood's record-setting shot came at the 8:02 mark of the third period as her 171st career three pointer helped LMU open up a 12-point advantage. She eclipsed a mark of 170 set by Renayh Young from 2007-10. Young set her benchmark in 120 career games.
Pepperdine made one final run in the fourth quarter, pulling to within one, 63-62 on a Kelsey Brockway jumper with 4:42 to play. But the Lions responded with a huge 12-0 run and hit 10-of-14 free throws in those final minutes.
LMU returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 7, opening a two-game WCC road trip at Saint Mary's. Tip off from McKeon Pavilion in Moraga is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
