Sophomore Sarah Sponcil recorded a double-double while senior Hannah Tedrow narrowly missed a triple-double as LMU (7-3) defeated UC Santa Barbara (4-6) in five sets on the road on Friday, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14.
Sponcil teamed a match-high 23 kills with 10 digs and five aces, collecting her ninth double-double of the year. Tedrow, who set the attack to a .244 clip, dished out 53 assists with 12 digs and eight digs. Tedrow managed the eight kills on 10 swings with one error (.700).
Sponcil, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., also collected three of LMU's nine match aces, with Kekai Whitford serving up three of her own. Whitford led all players with 14 digs. Helping on the attack, Jamie Lea and Rachelle Suaava pitched in 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Lions dropped the opening set by a close 25-23 decision, as UCSB hit .345 and received four of Ali Barbeau's eight match kills. The Lions bounced back nicely in the second, running away with a lopsided 25-14 set behind six kills from Suaava. Sponcil registered a pair of aces and the Lions hit .464. Sponcil also teamed on a block as LMU posted two of its seven blocks in the period.
UCSB took a 2-1 match lead with the victory in the third after holding LMU to just .081 on the attack. The Gauchos hit .364 in the period, receiving three kills and a block assist from Chanel Hoffman. Hoffman led UCSB with 10 kills in the match, while the Gauchos posted 12 total team blocks.
Sponcil turned in her best period of the night in the fourth, going for seven kills on 14 swings with two errors to push LMU to a 25-23 victory and force a fifth set. After posting six kills in the first, Lea connected for four kills on 11 swings in the fourth.
Playing in a race to 15, LMU came out with the 16-14 victory to earn the victory. Sponcil had three kills in the finale, while the Lions put together a pair of blocks. Jaylen Villanueva kept the Gauchos in the set, delivering four of her six match kills. Tied at 11, UCSB scored two straight points to take a late 13-11 advantage. LMU broke Elizabeth Sheffield's serve on a Tedrow kill before Sponcil registered a kill in front of a Mirabello kill to make it 14-13 LMU. After UCSB evened the tally at 14, Sponcil connected for her final kill before Barbeau erred on an attack to hand LMU the victory.
LMU will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Poly for a match at 4 pm PT.
